Modernizing Data Collection in a Security-Sensitive Landscape
A non-profit healthcare quality organization—referred to here as HealthMetrics Collaborative for privacy reasons—provides the only national, unified specialty palliative care data registry. Each year, they conduct a comprehensive program-level survey to gather operational statistics from over 300 hospital and community-based palliative care programs across the country. These data points include program type, geographic setting, and patient volumes. While the data is sensitive, it does not qualify as protected health information (PHI), making it an ideal starting point for a broader data modernization initiative.
HealthMetrics Collaborative was previously using a platform that lacked the user-friendliness and automation capabilities needed to support a growing network of contributors. As the organization planned to expand into collecting patient-level data in the future, they needed to build a secure, scalable infrastructure as a foundation.
Key challenges included:
- Replacing an outdated data entry system with a more user-friendly, modern platform.
- Ensuring data security and privacy for sensitive program-level data.
- Automating data aggregation and visualization for more than 300 annual survey submissions.
- Providing users with a streamlined, secure way to input, save, and later submit complex, multi-hour surveys.
- Creating a user access model that supports differentiated access based on hospital or community program types.
In short, HealthMetrics Collaborative needed more than a survey tool—they needed an integrated, secure member portal with built-in analytics and the flexibility to grow with their future data needs.
